Top Signs Your Dog is Allergic to Chicken or Turkey

Have you ever asked yourself these questions?

  • Why are my dog’s poops so runny?
  • Why is my dog’s skin red and inflamed?
  • Why are my dog’s ears swollen?
  • Why is my dog so itchy and losing hair?
  •

If happening frequently, your dog may be allergic to poultry—one of the top food allergens for dogs.  If you suspect your dog has a chicken allergy, be aware of the most common signs and symptoms of poultry allergies.

    Gastrointestinal Issues

Loose stool, diarrhea, and excessive gas that can clear a room are the more commonly known symptoms of gut-health issues caused by food allergies. Dogs with poultry allergies may also experience vomiting, which can range from occasional to severe.

    Chronic Skin Problems

Food allergies often manifest as skin irritation, leading to intense itching and scratching. You may also notice redness and inflammation of the skin, particularly around the ears, paws, face, and abdomen. Hot Spots, or areas of inflamed or infected skin, can also develop due to excessive scratching caused by protein allergies.

    Persistent Ear Infections

Many dog’s scratch at their ears excessively when experiencing an allergic reaction. If you’re also noticing an unpleasant odor emanating from the ears, it might be time to check with your veterinarian.

What do I do if my dog has a chicken allergy?

If you suspect your dog has a poultry allergy, work to eliminate that from their diet to see if symptoms improve. *Beware* Chicken is one of the most common protein sources in dog foods and treats. Be sure to check the ingredient label for ingredients—especially chicken meal, which often gets buried in a sea of ingredients. We’ve noticed it in many salmon daily foods.

Rest assured, Chippin is always free from chicken and turkey. Instead, we opt for gut-healthy proteins that are easier for your dog to digest. Check out our cricket Superfood biscuits for healthier poops.
